This document presents a systematic review of research exploring the effects of strength training on cross-country skiing performance. The researchers analyzed ten studies examining the impact of various strength training programs on variables such as maximal strength, work economy, and performance in elite cross-country skiers. The review found that maximal strength training led to improvements in some performance-related aspects, such as strength and work economy. However, it did not significantly impact aerobic parameters like VO2max and VO2peak, suggesting that strength training alone may not be sufficient to enhance these aspects of performance. This research underscores the complex relationship between strength training, work economy, and aerobic capacity in cross-country skiing, highlighting the need for further research to understand the optimal training approaches for achieving performance improvements in this demanding sport.
