Nickel Plate Junior Race Team member Fred Albrechtson has just returned from the Canadian National Cross Country Ski Championships in Thunder Bay where he won a gold medal in the mixed juvenile boys and girls relay along with Zoe Hallman from Smithers, BC. This is the first medal ever for the Nickel Plate Ski Club at the National Championships and will be a huge motivator for all our up and coming ski racers in the junior racer program. Fred had strong performances throughout the week of racing including two top ten finishes out of a field of seventy of the best juvenile boys racers in the country.
Fred singlehandedly put our club on the map by placing our club 40th out of 64 teams competing. He is certainly now in the running to be selected to the BC Cross Country Ski Team and will be attending provincial training camps both dryland and on glaciers throughout the off season. He has received coaching support from head coach Chris Garwah and assistant coaches Jerome Jang, John Wilkie, Dave Michael and Murray Farbridge and waxing support from the Revelstoke Ski Club at many out of town events. His parents Jenny and Danny along with brother Simon live at Apex and are dedicated to supporting him in his training and racing. We are excited to watch Fred progress each year, and we know we can provide him with a ski training facility second to none.
